Excursion Details:
  • The Generalife was built between the 12th and 14th Century and was used by Muslim royalty as a place of rest. It was designed as a rural villa and consist of decorative gardens, fruit and vegetable gardens, courts and other building structures.
  • The Generalife Theatre was built in 1952 on an extension of the gardens and still houses productions today. The Palace of the Generalife looks more like a country house, with an archway covered in markings and symbols.
  • The grounds also consist of the High Gardens, the Low Gardens, the Water Stairway, the Water Ponds, the Court of the Main Canal, the Romantic Observation Point, the Soultana’s Court and the Promenade of the Cypress Trees.
  • Over the years the buildings have been renovated and updated so much that it is unsure what the original design and structure really looked like. Original designs and details of the buildings have been covered with more simple coverings.
