The ultimate bespoke language trip to St Malo.
St Malo is a must-visit destination. Château de St-Malo was built by the dukes of Brittany in the 15th and 16th centuries and is now the home of the Musée d'Histoire de St-Malo, which examines the life and history of the city, while the lookout tower offers eye-popping views of the old city.
The St-Malo ramparts' northern stretch looks across to the remains of this former prison, built by Vauban in 1689. Standing atop a rocky outcrop, the fort can is only accessible at low tide.
Walking through the cobbled streets of St Malo’s old town feels like you’ve stepped back in time. This popular tourist destination and busy ferry port offer visitors an authentic glimpse into Brittany’s important seafaring past. The pretty islands of Grand Be and Petit Be can be visited on foot at low tide, with the Fort National reachable on foot from St Malo's longest beach, the Grand Plage.
St Malo has several districts, the most popular being intra muros or ‘inside the walls’. The tall granite buildings, most of which were restored after being bombed during the war, house an interesting mix of cosy hotels, restaurants to suit all tastes and shops by the dozen.
Take a tour on the little train to get your bearings or enjoy a bracing walk around the ramparts. The Musée de la Ville tells you all you need to know about the town’s history and includes some fascinating maritime objects like the prow of a ship.
School trips to St Malo: Soak up the culture.
Just outside of the city is the town of St Servan where the imposing Tour Solidor contains a museum dedicated to the French sailors who first negotiated Cape Horn. The Grand Aquarium is home to the Shark's Ring, an immense tank containing 3 metre long sharks, and the Nautibus submersible and is also not to be missed.
Travel a little further out from the town into the surrounding countryside and you'll find the Malouinières, the mansions of the shipbuilders and corsairs who made the town rich and famous in the 18th century.
Long sandy beaches sweep east from the old town to the district of Rothéneuf. Here you’ll find the former house of one of St Malo’s most famous sons, Jacques Cartier, who discovered Canada; the 15th-century Manoir de Limoëlou houses a fascinating museum dedicated to the explorer.
