The ultimate bespoke language trip to Nantes.

Spirited and innovative, this artsy city on the banks of the Loire has a history of reinventing itself. It was founded by Celts around 70 BC and in AD 937 it joined the duchy of Brittany. The Edict of Nantes, a landmark royal charter guaranteeing civil rights to France's Huguenots (Protestants), was signed in Nantes by Henri IV in 1598.

Shipbuilding anchored the city's economy until the late 20th century and when the shipyards relocated westwards to St-Nazaire, Nantes transformed itself into a thriving student and cultural hub.

Nantes is a very old city, and in the city centre, you'll see examples of the architecture of its medieval past, along with more recent 19th-century architecture. This area is bursting with brasseries, bistros, and cafes and a great place just to stroll around and get a feel for the city.

Nantes' castle has recently undergone restoration and is the second oldest building in Nantes after the cathedral and one of the famous castles of the Loire Valley. The inner courtyard is built in the Renaissance style with blistering white tufa, and the Nantes History Museum is inside. Nearby is the Place du Commerce, a largely pedestrian area that offers a good array of restaurants.

St. Pierre and St. Paul Cathedral: Begun in 1434, the Gothic cathedral wasn't finished until the end of the 19th century. After a 1972 fire, the interior was restored. Inside the cathedral's 11th-century crypt is a museum of religions.

The Castle of the Dukes of Brittany is an unmissable attraction and right in the city centre. Built-in the 15th century by Francis II, Duke of Burgundy and his daughter Anne of Brittany, it houses an excellent museum which takes you through the story of the city of Nantes.

School trips to Nantes: Let us take the strain.

Take the shuttle boat from the Gare Maritime on the north bank of the Loire past the Isle de Nantes to Trentemoult and you feel as if you’ve stepped back into the 19th century. This little village with its brightly coloured houses and narrow streets by the harbour was once a fishing village. Today the fishermen and sailors have been replaced by artists who keep the atmosphere and the feel of a country village - albeit one just minutes from the city.

Opened in 1860, the Jardin des Plantes, an exquisitely landscaped park is among France's most interesting botanical gardens. Century-old magnolia and mulberry trees, Japanese maples, tulip trees, redwoods (sequoias) and magnificent cedars tower above beautiful flower beds, duck ponds, fountains and the enchanting Serre de l'Île de Palmiers, a glass 19th-century hothouse filled with palm trees.
