The ultimate bespoke language trip to Lille.
Lille is a city in northern France, in French Flanders. On the Deûle River, near France's border with Belgium, it is the capital of the Hauts-de-France region and the prefecture of the Nord department.
Recent decades have seen the country's fourth-largest city (by greater urban area) transform from an industrial centre into a glittering cultural and commercial hub. Highlights include its enchanting old town with magnificent French and Flemish architecture, renowned art museums, stylish shopping, outstanding cuisine, a nightlife scene, and 1600 designers.
The Palais des Beaux Arts is Lille's illustrious Fine Arts Museum and a must-see when visiting Lille. It claims France's second-largest collection after Paris' Musée du Louvre. Its cache of sublime 15th- to 20th-century paintings include works by Rubens, Van Dyck and Manet.
Another popular visit is the La Piscine Musee d’Art et d’Industrie. This is an art deco swimming pool built between 1927 and 1932 that is now a museum showcasing fine arts.
The exhibits include paintings, sculptures, drawings, furniture, textiles, fashion in a unique watery environment. The pool is still filled and sculptures are reflected in the water. Quite stunning.
School trips to Lille: Let us take the strain.
School trips to Lille are a great way for students to improve their French language skills.
What is the connection between food and learning French? Well, maybe it's not an obvious link but hungry students very quickly learn to engage with the locals.
The food in Lille is superb. The favourite food market is to be found in the neighbourhood of Wazemmes. The adjacent outdoor market is the place to go on Sunday morning. Buzzing with activity, it's a real carnival scene.
The Rue des Sarrazins and Rue Jules Guesde are lined with shops, restaurants and Tunisian bakeries. Many of these are owned by, and catering to, the area's North African residents.
Le Tripostal is splashed with street art murals. Previously a red-brick postal sorting centre, it was transformed into an arts centre in 2004, when Lille was the European Capital of Culture.
Changing art and photography exhibitions (most of these are free) usually feature local artists. There's also a bar, canteen-style restaurant, a kids' play area and a design shop.
So this is a big draw for young people as It regularly hosts events such as DJ sets, live music gigs and workshops.
The Maison Natale de Charles de Gaulle is the upper-middle-class house in which Charles de Gaulle was born in 1890. It is now a museum presenting the French general and president in the context of his times. Displays include de Gaulle's baptismal robe and some evocative newsreels.
School tours and language trips all year round.
So, as you can see, there's much to see, much to do.
Lille is a very popular destination for school language trips both in the summer and the winter. In fact, the festive period is as popular as the summer.
The Lille Christmas markets are always a big draw both with the locals and tourists. Lille plays host to the largest Christmas Market of Northern France and has an extensive range of celebrations throughout the festive period (the Ferris Wheel is certainly hard to miss and a firm favourite with young and old).
It's a busy time of the year and pupils enjoy the huge range of attractions and relaxed atmosphere that comes with the Christmas season.
