The ultimate bespoke language trip to Munich.
Munich is the capital and most populous city of Bavaria, the second-most populous German federal state.
With a population of around 1.5 million, it is the third-largest city in Germany, after Berlin and Hamburg, as well as the 12th-largest city in the European Union. So there is much to see and anyone studying German will find it a great place to practice their skills.
Munich is located at the river Isar in the south of Bavaria. It is famous for its beautiful architecture, fine culture, and the annual Oktoberfest beer celebration. The beer festival is popular around the world and attracts huge numbers of surprisingly well-mannered tourists.
Munich's cultural scene is second to none in Germany, with the museums even considered by some to outrank Berlin in quality.
Although it was heavily damaged by bombing during World War II, many of its historic buildings have been rebuilt. So the city centre appears mostly as it did in the late 1800s including its largest church, the Frauenkirche, and the city hall, Neues Rathaus.
School trips to Munich: Learn the German Language
Home to Bavaria's Wittelsbach rulers from 1508 until WWI, the Residenz is Munich's number-one attraction. The amazing treasures, as well as all the trappings of the Wittelbachs' lifestyle over the centuries, are on display at the Residenzmuseum, which takes up around half of the palace.
Bayerisches Nationalmuseum is a classic 19th-century museum. It is a palatial neoclassical edifice overflowing with exotic treasure and thought-provoking works of art.
The guide book describes it as "a repository for a nation’s history, a grand purpose-built display case for royal trinkets, church baubles and state-owned rarities". It certainly is a great place to spend time.
The most famous part of the Munich skyline is still the 15th-Century Frauenkirche. It is famous for its twin 100m-high towers, and it’s possible to climb to the top for far-reaching views over the city.
