The ultimate bespoke language trip to Dresden.

Dresden is the capital city of Saxony, Germany, on the River Elbe near the Czech border. Dresden has a long history as the capital and royal residence for the Electors and Kings of Saxony, who for centuries furnished the city with cultural and artistic splendor. It was once the family seat of Polish monarchs.

The city was known as the Jewel Box, because of its baroque and rococo city centre. After the war restoration work has helped to reconstruct parts of the historic inner city, including the Katholische Hofkirche, the Zwinger and the famous Semper Oper.

The Frauenkirche and the Old Masters, the Blue Wonder and the Green Vault; the picturesque banks of the Elbe and the popular Wilhelminian district; the Saxon State Orchestra and the International Dixieland Festival, the baroque Old Town and the modern city centre, the Garden Suburb and the cultural metropolis; "Florence on the Elbe" and the capital of Saxony: the many faces of Dresden.

Dresden carries visitors away with a synthesis of the arts: fascinating buildings and art treasures, impressive museums, as well as orchestras and choirs of worldwide reputation.

A collaboration between the architect Matthäus Pöppelmann and the sculptor Balthasar Permoser, the Zwinger was built between 1710 and 1728 on the orders of Augustus the Strong, who, having returned from seeing Louis XIV's palace at Versailles, wanted something similar for himself.

Primarily a party palace for royals, the Zwinger has ornate portals that lead into the vast fountain-studded courtyard, which is framed by buildings lavishly adorned with evocative sculpture. Today it houses three superb museums within its baroque walls.

School trips to Dresden: Let us take the strain.

Dresden's extraordinary Renaissance city palace, home to its Saxon rulers from 1485 to 1918, now shelters multiple precious collections – including the unmissable Grünes Gewölbe (Green Vault), a real-life Aladdin’s Cave spilling over with precious objects wrought from gold, ivory, silver, diamonds and jewels. The palace itself was bombed out in 1945, and though reconstruction began in the 1960s, it wasn't completed until 2013.

The domed Frauenkirche – Dresden’s most beloved symbol – has literally risen from the city's ashes. The original church graced the skyline for two centuries before collapsing after the February 1945 bombing and was rebuilt between 1994 and 2005.

A spitting image of the original, today's structure may not bear the gravitas of age but that only slightly detracts from its beauty, inside and out.
